McCarthy Tire Buys Main Tire Exchange in New York State

DECEMBER 7, 2012 – McCarthy Tire Service has acquired Main Tire Exchange Inc. in western New York State. The deal includes two commercial tire service centers in Buffalo and Rochester, a combination commercial and retail store in Dansville, and a Bandag retread manufacturing plant adjacent to the Dansville store. Main Tire Exchange was owned by the Shay family.

“This acquisition improves our service coverage area in western New York State and northeastern Pennsylvania,” says John McCarthy Jr., president of McCarthy Tire Service. “Main Tire has an exceptional heritage of strong customer service and state-of-the-art service centers. This company was a natural choice to grow the McCarthy Tire family.”

The Shay family has had a long legacy of serving the transportation industry in western New York. Shay’s Service started in Dansville in 1920. The family subsequently launched companies that handled fuel oil distribution, freight transportation, and truck repair. They started Main Tire Exchange in 1972.

The commercial tire shop located at 3781 Broadway in Buffalo, New York, is less than one-and-a-half miles from the New York State Thruway (I-90). It does a brisk business in local and regional fleets. The commercial tire shop at 40 Mushroom Boulevard in Rochester, New York, has easy access to I-390, I-590, and the Thruway. It services several large fleet accounts, including a major grocery store chain.

The third outlet at 9384 Main Street in Dansville, New York, is multifaceted. It has a commercial tire shop, a mechanical repair shop for heavy trucks, a full automotive center for passenger cars and light trucks, a retread manufacturing plant, and a distribution center.

All three locations are now part of McCarthy Tire’s 24-hour roadside assistance program for commercial trucks. They also service off-the-road (OTR) and construction vehicles, farm tractors and agricultural equipment, and industrial equipment.

With this acquisition, McCarthy Tire now has approximately 900 employees in 43 service centers and seven retread manufacturing plants. The company has operations in seven states – New York State, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, and Maryland.

Founded in 1926, McCarthy Tire Service is a family-owned and operated tire dealer headquartered in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. The company has more than 60 service locations and 10 Bandag retread tire manufacturing plants along the east coast of the United States. McCarthy Tire is the sixth largest independent commercial tire dealer and one of the top 50 retail tire dealers in the country. The company offers tire sales and service; automotive mechanical services and repairs; fleet services; truck mechanical services; 24-hour commercial roadside assistance; and retread tire manufacturing.
