AUGUST 17, 2015 – McCarthy Tire Service has closed its tire retread plant in Somerset, Pennsylvania, effective immediately. The plant was dedicated to retreading and repairing off-the-road (OTR) tires for heavy construction and mining vehicles. It produced 40 OTR tires a day.
The company will continue to provide off-the-road retreads to customers. It will source them from RDH Tire and Retread Co. and B.R. Retreading Inc.
“OTR retreading is a highly capital-intensive process,” said John McCarthy Jr., president of McCarthy Tire. “An OTR retread plant needs new equipment every three to four years to stay competitive in the marketplace.”
“McCarthy Tire Service is focusing our energies on the service side of our business for our OTR and commercial customers in order to increase their uptime and production capacity. This includes new tire sales, quality retread tires, and expert service.”
McCarthy Tire has seven medium truck retread manufacturing plants:
- Albany, Cobleskill, and Dansville, New York
- Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania
- Federalsburg, Maryland
- Manassas, Virginia
- Charlotte, North Carolina
It will continue to retread industrial tires at its Manassas plant.
McCarthy Tire is ranked number seven Modern Tire Dealer magazine’s list of “Top 100 Retreaders.”
